The Princess immerses the audience in a retelling of Diana’s life entirely through real archive footage, a stark difference from dramatised Spencer or The Crown.

The film follows Diana from her engagement in 1981 using pictures, news clips, interviews and audio recordings.

Instead of relying on new interviews with historians and experts commonly seen in royal documentaries, it pieces together the paparazzi frenzies and media scrutiny of Diana’s 16 years in the spotlight using nothing but real archive footage. It recalls the public reaction to Diana’s death in 1997 and the media coverage of the funeral, highlighting the complicated relationship between the monarchy, the public, and the media, which still exists today.

Watch The Princess in New Zealand cinemas from August 4th.
