We took our fashion inspo this month from Funny Face and went for Audrey Hepburn’s nerdy girl look (shot at Lamplight Books, Auckland).
Tucked-in shirts and loafers. Romance in the stacks. It’s true that I found love in a bookstore once. Sorry for the meet-cute, but it can happen. He was tall and handsome with glasses, and smiled when he talked. More importantly, he was a writer. If it was a different era, he would have had ink-stained fingertips. As it was, he had beautiful hands and could play tennis well. He wore baggy ivory trousers and used the word “neat” in the same way people say cool. He loved Elvis and Duke Ellington and Dusty Springfield. He had a thing for Russell Hoban and Alice Munro. He knew all the New Zealand writers. We didn’t really have a “first date”, we just let the shelves collapse until we were on the same page. It was inevitable, really. There was a bunker below the shop and a mezzanine floor. Both offered places to get to know each other better. In the beginning, every book made me blush and every line was a poem. Lastly, we knew the end of a story is really everything. Reader, I married him.
