Ramp Up Your Smoothie Game With These Three Recipes

Step into the world of smoothie-making, where the intersection of nutrition and refinement awaits. The art of crafting a smoothie is an exquisite opportunity to showcase your creativity and elevate your palate to new heights.

Firstly, let us consider the foundation of any great smoothie: fresh, nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables. Think of the elegant vibrance brought by kale, spinach, berries, bananas, and avocado. Not only do these ingredients provide a wealth of vitamins and minerals, but they also impart an elevated visual and gustatory experience.

Yet, let us not stop at mere sustenance. Let us strive for refinement by incorporating superfoods. These are nutrient-dense foods believed to possess health-promoting properties, such as chia seeds, hemp seeds, goji berries, and spirulina. Not only do they contribute to the nutritional value of your smoothie, but they also add a tasteful and fashionable twist.

Texture is also an essential consideration. While the essence of a smoothie is, undoubtedly, its smoothness, adding ingredients such as nut butter, coconut flakes, or cacao nibs adds a delightful crunch, while simultaneously imbuing your creation with elevated flavor profiles.

Presentation is everything, and a smoothie deserves to be appreciated in style. Consider decorating your smoothie with fresh fruit slices, edible flowers, or a delicate drizzle of honey. Not only will this enhance the visual appeal of your smoothie, but it will also add a touch of sophistication to your morning routine.

Lastly, but by no means the least, is the vessel. The importance of a well-chosen receptacle cannot be understated. Whether you opt for a sleek glass tumbler or a timeless mason jar, the vessel can provide the finishing touch to your smoothie masterpiece.

Is Your Makeup Sliding Off? Top 5 Primers for Oily Skin

In a world where glass skin is everything, dewy skin products and hydrating makeup items have taken over the shelves of department stores everywhere.

One problem, where have all the matte products gone?

Combination and oily skin types have taken the backseat for a while, and it’s time for a change. With cloud skin makeup trends and matte makeup slowly returning, let’s discuss the top 5 best primers for shine-free, long-lasting, stunningly matte skin.

Glow Recipe Strawberry BHA Pore-Smooth Treatment

Glow Recipe Strawberry BHA Pore-Smooth Treatment $78 NZD

Glow Recipe recently released their Strawberry BHA Pore-Smooth Treatment. It is a one-and-done skincare primer that will help regulate oil production from the inside out and keeps your skin mattified and ready for a long day.

While encapsulated BHA and strawberry enzymes smooth uneven texture over time, plant-derived pore-minimising strawberry leaf extract absorbs any excess oil that targets the appearance of large pores. Additionally, tapioca and rice keep the oils at bay without clogging the skin, creating a smooth and blurred surface for your foundation.

Texture-wise, it has a cooling sensation that feels invisible when blended into the complexion. Plus, the Glow Recipe Strawberry BHA Pore-Smooth Treatment is silicone free! Overall, we recommend the Strawberry BHA Pore-Smooth Treatment for those with combination or mildly oily skin.

Milk Makeup Pore Eclipse Primer

Milk Makeup Pore Eclipse Primer $67 NZD

The Milk Makeup Pore Eclipse Primer is one of the best things to happen in the makeup world! If you have oily skin that cannot seem to hold onto foundation, you must give it a go.

The ingredients include AHAs, peptides and antioxidants for a lovely balance of skincare and makeup. Over time, you should notice smaller appearing pores, brighter skin and less oil production. Remember, just because you have oily skin, it doesn’t mean you should avoid hydrating it. Peptides and antioxidants will keep the skin happy and mitigate excess oil production for a healthy complexion.

As for its priming abilities, the Pore Eclipse feels like you have used a magic eraser on the skin. Instantly, you will notice a mattified complexion that feels quite dry to the touch. As such, we recommend this primer for those with very oily skin.

Urban Decay All-Nighter Glow

Urban Decay All-Nighter Glow $79 NZD

The Urban Decay All-Nighter Glow is one of the most underrated primers for combination oily skin types. Despite its name, this is not a primer for dewy and shiny skin. Instead, it creates a sticky surface for your makeup to latch onto and stay on for hours and hours.

Hyaluronic acid and agave extract help boost the skin without shrivelling it dry. This way, your skin produces less oil throughout the day to compensate. It turns out, reverse psychology works really well for combatting excessively oily skin!

Press into the skin and wait a few minutes for the stickiness to activate before applying your foundation. We have found that using a sponge is better suited for this primer as you don’t want to move this product around too much once applied.

Smashbox Photo Finish Control Mattifying Primer

Smashbox Photo Finish Control Mattifying Primer $82 NZD

The Smashbox Photo Finish Control Mattifying Primer is for heavy-duty oil control. We recommend trying the other options if you have sensitive skin as this primer contains salicylic acid. On the other hand, if your skin agrees with salicylic acid and you already use it in your skincare regime, this primer is the one for you.

We also recommend this product for men looking for an easy oil-controlling solution that doesn’t look or feel like makeup. The Photo Finish Control Mattifying Primer has an impossibly thin consistency that disappears into the skin as you apply it. As you pat and blend, you will notice an immediate difference in the look of your skin. Any appearance of oil or shine will be picked up and absorbed away.

This Smashbox primer is also excellent for spot priming in particularly oily areas. After your skincare routine, apply in the t zone, inner cheeks or chin and leave the rest of your face for a balanced and well-protected barrier before you apply your makeup!

arbonne Makeup Primer

arbonne Makeup Primer $71 NZD

We thought to include the arbonne Makeup Primer for those who prioritise pore blurring over oil control. Don’t get us wrong; this primer has formidable oil-controlling abilities. However, the arbonne Makeup Primer is much better at counteracting the appearance of large pores, and this is a feature of the skin that often goes hand-in-hand with oily or combo skin types.

Unlike the rest of the lineup, the arbonne Makeup Primer has a thicker consistency and a slightly slippery feel. Despite this factor, you can be rest assured that your foundation will not ball up or pill on the skin. Rather, the thicker texture envelops the skin in a smoothening blanket and keeps the oil from penetrating the surface. Just give the primer a few minutes to settle into the skin before applying anything on top.

We recommend this primer for those who only wear makeup for special occasions. While dimethicone is a wonder for texture, it isn’t the best ingredient to use on the skin daily.

How to Blend Foundation: The Brush v The Sponge

Brush or Sponge? Ah, the age-old question. The truth is, the answer is totally context-dependent but there are a couple of clues that can help us decide which tool is better for blending in our base makeup.

Today, we will share those clues so you can feel confident in your choice and unlock the potential of your foundation routine.

@charlottetilbury

Skin Type

@augustinusbader

The first step is to determine your skin type. Once you have a good idea of how sensitive, dry or textured your skin is, knowing which tool to use becomes easy to understand. For example, if you suffer from dry skin and often experience flaking, using a sponge will help combat those issues in two important ways.

Firstly, the moisture from a damp sponge will help hydrate the skin when blending in your foundation. Secondly, the pressing motions of using a sponge won’t disrupt any dry skin as opposed to the bristles of a brush that may pick up on texture.

The same applies to those who have active acne. Using a brush and swirling on top of these sensitive areas will only irritate and potentially worsen the skin condition. Instead, using a gentle pressing motion with a sponge will be much more effective.

Furthermore, a sponge is cleaned much more frequently than a brush. Thus, a sponge is the way to go if you have particularly reactive skin that is on the sensitive side. On the other hand, if you have relatively normal skin and don’t want to use a tool that needs cleaning and washing before every use, a brush may be more valuable to you.

The Coverage of Your Foundation

NARS foundation stack
@narsissist

Generally speaking, brushes are much better at preserving the coverage of foundations. This is because a brush doesn’t absorb as much foundation as a sponge, but also because it is a tool that is used dry. As a result, a brush will not dilute the coverage of a foundation with any water.

Let’s say you have a full-coverage or matte foundation that is becoming a little too heavy for your liking. You can troubleshoot this by using a damp sponge. In doing so, you are absorbing some of the excess product and dialling down the coverage. However, the kind of sponge you choose is also important to consider.

For example, a microfibre sponge, such as the Juno, absorbs much less liquid, whether that be water or foundation. Therefore, if you like the idea of a sponge but want to maximise the coverage of your base, try using a microfibre sponge.

You can use this formula for brushes, too. If you have a tinted moisturiser or low-coverage foundation that needs a boost of coverage, a brush can help you do that. Especially when the bristles are dense and tightly packed together. Coupled with a buffing and tapping motion, you can help increase the opacity of your base makeup.

Is Your Foundation Oil-Based or Water-Based?

Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless campaign shot
Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Foundation $76 NZD.

Remember those science lesson videos where someone would pour water and oil into the same jug and they would separate into two perfect layers? In the end, we learned that the two don’t really mix. Using that same logic, find out whether your foundation is water or oil-based. This may be the next clue in figuring out whether a brush or sponge will be the better choice.

For example, a brush may be better if you have particularly oily skin or use an oil-based foundation. This is because the water from a sponge may disrupt the formula of an oil-based foundation and break up the product on the face. On the other hand, a damp sponge will work excellently with water-based foundations. While this isn’t an exact formula that applies to every case, it’s a great starting point for beginners who need a little nudge in the right direction.

Additionally, an oil-free foundation will work fabulously with a damp sponge! Don’t rely on the label for this information. Instead, take a look at the ingredients or run it through a quick Google search to find out. Some of our favourite oil-free foundations include the NARS Natural Radiant Long-Wear Foundation and the Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Foundation.

Our Favourite New Restaurant Openings

As a self-proclaimed dining connoisseur, eating is one of my absolute passions. I’m always on the lookout for new openings that house an array of new and fun flavours.

I have eaten my way through Auckland of late, so here’s a roundup of my favourite recent openings for you to add to your dining hit list.

Aigo

The beautiful brainchild of David Lee, Aigo is a Korean-centric noodle bar inspired by European flavours located in Ponsonby.

It opened in late 2022, and has been one of my favourites ever since.

Aigo’s food is so unique, fun and inspired but in a humble setting. The sharing style menu is perfect for a friendly catch up that doesn’t break your bank. The must-haves are the scampi noodles and the eggplant which I absolutely devoured.

Kol

Sid and Chand Sahrawat (from Cassia, French Cafe and Siddart) opened their doors to Kol, a new Indian dining restaurant in November 2022.

The premise of Kol is Indian food (with eurocentric flavours) cooked over fire to add the smoky flavour.

Every time I have been to Kol, it has been stacked with people. This restaurant proves that there is far more to Indian food than curry. The menu has so many unmissable items, from the amritsari prawn toast to the vindaloo fries (which is definitely more on the spicy side!) to the goat’s cheese and porcini truffle kulcha. You definitely won’t go wrong ordering everything on the menu.

Tokki

2022 really was the year of Korean openings taking over. Milford’s Tokki is extremely underrated and over delivers every time. Tokki calls itself a local Korean neighbourhood restaurant but utilises seasonal items for a constantly refreshed menu.  Again, the menu has some absolute stars like the crispy eggplant, the flat noodles and the wagyu rump bulgogi. With flavours that explode in your mouth and generous portions, Tokki needs to be next on your list.

Ragtag

Ragtag has been a cult favourite from its days as a taco truck in Auckland. Chef Dan Freeman opened Ragtag the restaurant’s doors in Westmere in December 2022, and it’s been the perfect addition to Westmere village.

Ragtag prides itself on being a restaurant which is “100% not authentic”  in its Latin and South American style flavours. However, this is some of the best food I have had of that sort since being in Mexico and Brazil.

The tostadas and quesadillas are filled with unique and quality produce (sweetcorn and ceviche… delicious), and with delectable cocktails to pair, you’ll have no complaints at Ragtag.

Oohfa

Sourdough pizzas have really taken over. I thought it was at its pinnacle when I first discovered Frat’s pizza in Mt Albert which opened at the end of 2021, but this Dominion Road beauty is a game changer.

Opening its doors in August of 2022 from the creators of much loved pasta bar Pici, Oohfa is the perfect restaurant for a humble pizza and wine.

The flavours of their pizza are divine to say the least – ranging from tomato and stracciatella to a prawn gamberi pizza. The choices are endless and I find myself struggling to resist the urge to order everything twice over.

Got Milk? Here’s the Impact of Your Creamy Beverage

Almond Milk, Oat Milk, Dairy Milk

Picture this: you’re sitting at the kitchen table, a glass of milk in front of you. It’s creamy, cool, and familiar – just like the memories of your childhood. But as you take a sip, you start to wonder about the impact your food choices are having on the environment and your health. Is it time to ditch the dairy and switch to plant-based milk? Let’s take a closer look at the science behind this controversial beverage and separate fact from fiction.

Environmental Impact

One of the biggest concerns about dairy milk is its impact on the environment. According to the United Nations, livestock production is responsible for around 14.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions. That’s a lot of cows, folks. And let’s not forget the land, water, and other resources required to produce milk. Plant-based milk, on the other hand, is often touted as a more environmentally-friendly and animal-friendly option. But before you switch to almond milk, consider this: almond farming has been linked to the depletion of groundwater resources, which has negative effects on local ecosystems and communities. And that’s just one example. The bottom line? It’s important to make informed decisions based on the best available information.

Animal Welfare

Animal welfare is another major concern within the dairy industry. Many dairy farms use antibiotics and growth hormones to increase milk production, which can have negative effects on animal welfare and human health. But let’s not forget that the production of certain plant-based milks, such as almond milk, can have negative impacts on bee populations. Almond trees require pollination by bees in order to produce almonds, and as a result, beekeepers are brought in to transport their hives to almond farms during the blooming season. However, due to the high demand for almond milk, many beekeepers from out of state bring their hives to California, which has resulted in a massive increase in the number of bees being transported across the country with mass devastation to our already depleted bee population. California currently has 80% of almond farms, and though we don’t have these in New Zealand, the impact on the bee community is something we will feel globally. The moral of the story? It’s important to support companies that prioritize sustainable and ethical practices.

Nutritional Value

When it comes to nutritional value, dairy milk is a good source of calcium, vitamin D, and protein. But it can also be high in saturated fat and cholesterol, which can increase the risk of heart disease and other health problems. Plant-based milk, on the other hand, is often lower in calories and saturated fat, and can provide important nutrients such as fiber and vitamins. And let’s not forget about the lactose intolerant among us – plant-based milk is a lifesaver for those who can’t digest lactose.

To Milk, or not to Milk?

So which type of milk is right for you? It ultimately comes down to personal preference and individual health needs. Maybe you’re a die-hard dairy lover who can’t imagine life without it. Or maybe you’re looking to reduce your environmental impact, have lactose intolerance, or simply prefer the taste of plant-based milk. Either way, it’s important to listen to your body, educate yourself, and make informed decisions about what foods you put in it. After all, there is never a hard fact or scientific evidence that is uncontended. So go ahead, try and try again until you find something that works for you – and don’t forget to enjoy every sip.

Dining al Fresco: Elevating Your Outdoor Picnic Game with Creative Recipes

There’s something undeniably magical about dining al fresco – the gentle breeze, sun-kissed skin, and a carefree ambiance that can only be found in the great outdoors. Whether it’s a quaint picnic for two or a family gathering in the park, there’s no better way to celebrate the joys of the season than with a beautifully curated spread of delectable dishes. So, why not take your outdoor dining experience to the next level and elevate your picnic game with some creative recipes that will leave your taste buds singing?

When it comes to planning the perfect outdoor picnic, the key is to strike the right balance between delicious food and ease of preparation. After all, the goal is to enjoy the outdoors and not spend hours slaving away in the kitchen. Below are three of my favourite recipes that are sure to impress your guests, while still leaving you with plenty of time to relax and soak up the sun! But first, here are some steps to consider to curate your next al fresco dining experience as one to remember.

A Good Tipple

No outdoor picnic is complete without a few refreshing drinks. While classic lemonade and iced tea are always crowd pleasers, why not mix things up with some creative cocktails? A fruity Pimm’s Cup made with fresh berries and cucumber is the perfect complement to a warm day, while a refreshing cucumber gin and tonic will keep your taste buds tingling all evening long. For non-alcoholic options, consider crafting a batch of hibiscus iced tea or a refreshing strawberry basil lemonade for a taste of summer in every sip.

Presentation

When it comes to al fresco dining, presentation is just as important as taste. After all, the ambiance and aesthetic of the setting can make or break the entire experience. Add a touch of elegance to your outdoor picnic by bringing along some chic tableware. From woven placemats and linen napkins to vintage glassware and sleek cutlery, the right accessories can elevate your dining experience to a whole new level. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different colors and textures, and always pack a cozy blanket or two for lounging in style. With a little bit of creativity and a lot of delicious food, your next outdoor picnic is sure to be an unforgettable affair.

Seasonal Produce

Incorporating seasonal ingredients and flavours into your recipes will take your outdoor dining experience to the next level. Think fresh berries, juicy peaches, and crisp cucumbers for a taste of summer, or roasted pumpkin, hearty squash and warm spices for a cozy autumnal picnic. Not only will these ingredients add a burst of flavor and color to your dishes, but they’ll also help you connect with nature and appreciate the beauty of the season.

Consider A Theme

If you’re looking to add a touch of elegance and sophistication to your outdoor picnic, consider hosting a themed event. Whether it’s a chic Parisian-inspired picnic complete with baguettes and wine, or a whimsical garden party with floral arrangements and tea sandwiches, a well-executed theme can take your dining experience to the next level. Don’t be afraid to get creative with your decor and attire, and encourage your guests to join in on the fun.

Be in the Moment

Finally, don’t forget to savor the moment and enjoy the company of your loved ones. After all, the beauty of dining al fresco is the opportunity to slow down, disconnect from technology, and simply bask in the simple pleasures of life. So take a deep breath, soak in the scenery, and savor every delicious bite. With a little bit of creativity and a lot of love, your outdoor picnic is sure to be a memory that lasts a lifetime.

Now that we’ve covered all the essential elements for your al fresco experience, without further ado, here are three recipes to make it shine!

Celebrating The World of Whisky & Coffee: The Macallan Harmony II

Whether you’re an avid drinker of the precious amber hued liquid or a newbie who’s only just whetting her palette, you will not want to miss The Macallan Harmony II. And I don’t say this in some pushy salesy way like a car dealer with a thick gold chain around his neck. This is a PSA – a public service announcement. No lie – it’s a once-in-a-lifetime kind of thing.

The Macallan Harmony Collection Inspired by Intense Arabica is already sold out all over the world with the last few bottles being auctioned at head spinning prices. And of course, New Zealand is the lucky last country to launch this exquisite water of life nearly half a year later than the U.K. If you know your whisky, you’ve probably already secured one of these bottles.

On the 14th March, I was lucky enough to get an invite to the Arabica Garden Experience and I can well and truly say that it was worth the $350 ticket as I got to take home a bottle to imbibe in the comfort of my own armchair with a book and crackling wood-wick candle. This drop gives major ‘Succession’ vibes and for a moment, while you sip on this not-so-cheeky tipple, you can pretend to be a white whale who owns a piece of the world. If you were sorted into Slytherin, then you’ll know what I mean.

The Macallan II is the second edition of a limited annual release series in which innovation, social and environmental sustainability lives at its core. Everything about the drop is considered, right down to the packaging. This year, it celebrates the Ethiopian Arabica coffee bean and the otherwise discarded coffee bean husks have been repurposed to create the gorgeous   rich red pantone packaging, inspired by the coffee fruit.

A little bit about Macallan as a brand – it was founded in 1824 above the River Spey in north-east Scotland and the reason as to why whisky drinkers seek their juice so much is because their single malts are aged in sherry oak casks. I love bourbon and I love sherry – peat and smoke isn’t quite my thing (yet – I know I’ll get there in a decade or so). I’ve yet to fall head over heels into a barrel of whisky but last week, I did. It was love at first sip. I mean… I think I love this drop as much as Charles loves Camilla.

The Macallan Whisky Maker Steven Bremner created The Harmony Collection to pair perfectly with coffee. And because The Macallan doesn’t do anything in halves, Bremner hosted a masterclass at the estate to fill his cup, so to speak, with Ethiopian coffee grower Kenean Asefa Dukamo, whose family works with the Arabic variety; Scottish coffee roaster Lisa Lawson, an acclaimed pioneer of speciality coffee in Scotland; Andrea Allen, an award-winning American barista; Dhan Tamang, a UK-based coffee artist; and Professor Jonathan Morris, a leading coffee historian to bring it full circle.

“Exploring the world of coffee with our masters in the industry, who shared their knowledge, creativity, and love for their art, was both an education and an inspiration. There are many parallels between the approach to creating incomparable whisky and coffee. Each requires unique skills and craftsmanship to achieve depth and complexity of taste and both worlds aim to deliver an extraordinary consumption experience, “ Bremner said.

The Macallan Harmony II Arabica Garden Experience was in collaboration with none other than Ozone Coffee Roasters to share the full sensorial experience of drinking this wicked drop. By enjoying both the coffee and whisky side by side, the tasting notes of tiramisu, cappuccino, vanilla, gingerbread and berries swirled intensely in the mouth and gave an almost euphoric feeling. If you haven’t had your a-ha moment when drinking whisky, this particular whisky will most definitely awaken your inner hedonist and help you understand the expressive language that Bremner speaks.

The Oscars: 5 Women Wins That Prove Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number

The 95th Academy Awards (also known as the Oscars) was held by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on the evening of March 12, 2023, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The aim of the Oscars is to honor films released in 2022 that showed remarkable acting, screenplay, costume and music.

In Hollywood, a common paradigm is that you peak at a certain age, and your chances at an iconic role decline over time. This year at the Oscars, there were two women wins that were significant, impactful and both related to women aged over 60.

Celebrating the fact that you’re never past your prime, the team at WOMAN+ have decided to take a look at 5 wins by women at the Oscars that have shown that age isn’t anything but a number.

Oscars 2023 – Michelle Yeoh for Best Actress

Michelle Yeoh at 95th Academy Awards
Michelle Yeoh at 95th Academy Awards

Michelle Yeoh, at the age of 60 has made her mark on Hollywood starring in multiple films since her angry mother role in “Crazy Rich Asians.”

Her win made history for other reasons, which you can read about in our article here

Michelle entered the game late, but in her viral speech she signed off with… “Ladies, don’t ever let anybody tell you you’re past your prime”. A true testament to this fact were some of the other contenders in this category such as Angela Bassett (64 years), Cate Blanchett (54 years) and Michelle Williams (44 years).

Oscars 2023 – Jamie Lee Curtis  for Best Supporting Actress

Jamie Lee Curtis won Best Supporting Actress for her role alongside Michelle Yeoh in “Everything, Everywhere All At Once” at the age of 64.

She’s been acting since 1977, with some iconic roles in films such as “Freaky Friday” and “Halloween,” to name a few.

This win marked her first ever Oscar win, which at 64 is proof that there’s no age limit on achieving your dreams.

Oscars 2022 – Jane Campion for Best Director

Jane Campion at the 94th Academy Awards
Jane Campion at the 94th Academy Awards

This one gets double the recognition because Dame Elizabeth Jane Campion is a New Zealand filmmaker.

She, at the age of 66, won the Oscar for Best Director for her film “The Power Of the Dog” and was the only woman to ever be nominated in this category twice.

Hitting close to home, we couldn’t be more proud of this Wellington based woman!

Oscars 2021 – Frances McDormand for Best Actress

Frances McDormand, actress and producer won both the Best Actress and Best Picture Oscar in 2021 for her work in “Nomadland.”

Her speech was humble, appreciative and genuine – “We know the sword is our work, and I like work. Thank you for knowing that, and thanks for this”.

Oscars 2020 – Renee Zellweger for Best Actress

Renee at the 92nd Academy Awards with her award for Best Actress
Renee at the 92nd Academy Awards with her award for Best Actress

Renee, the youngest of this group, at the age of 51, won the 2020 oscar for Best Actress for her performance as Judy Garland in the film “Judy.”

We love Renee for her roles in films such as “Bridget Jones Diary” but taking a more serious tone, her performance in the film “Judy” was critically acclaimed as she told the story of the tragic life of Judy Garland.

Best Workday Lunch Deals: Auckland CBD

The work from home lifestyle is slowly easing out and more people are returning to the Auckland CBD for their work day. If an early start to prep your lunch is simply too much, there are ample options for your lunchtime eateries.

With inflation at 7.2% at the end of 2022, it can be a struggle to get a hearty meal for less than $25. Spending that at least 5 times a week gets you to a whopping total of around $125 for that week.

In the interest of saving your lunch money, we’ve rounded up 5 great work day lunch deals that will give you bang for your buck.

Amano Bakery – Britomart

Amano Bakery - Britomart

As we all know, Amano is a luxurious dining venue in Auckland. It’s a bustling hot spot during the day and night but Amano bakery does the lord’s work by serving up delicious bites at a far lower price point.

Sandwiches at Amano Bakery (everyone goes nuts for the meatball sandy!) are approx $12-13, and they also have daily takeaway pastas written on the wall for $12-14.

Recently I had the pleasure of devouring an absolutely delectable mushroom tagliatelle which was $12.50.

Oji Sushi – Britomart and Commercial Bay

Oji Sushi - Britomart and Commercial Bay

Oji Sushi is a delicious sushi and power bowl bar that also meets a high quality sushi and sashimi dining experience (they stock the Ebisu sushi rolls).

For just $7.90 (yes.. $7.90 in THIS economy), they do a sushi of the day deal with 8 pieces of sushi and a free Miso soup. My absolute favourite is the crispy prawn sushi which is the sushi of the day on Wednesday!

You can also go for a power or donburi bowl if you feel like splashing out a little more.

I could not recommend this more if you’re looking for something tasty, healthy and sourced with quality ingredients.

Revive Cafe on Wyndham Street

Revive Cafe on Wyndham Street

Revive, located near Chemist Warehouse on Wyndham street is a 100% vegan cafe which is health-oriented. It has an array of salads, meals, smoothies, juices.

My favourite thing about revive is the fact that their menu changes daily and on a Sunday, they will release the menu for the week. The salad bar has so many options from roast potato salads and noodle mingles to Moroccan chickpeas. If you fancy a hotpot dish, you can get things like a filo borek, a thai curry or a stew.

A regular sized meal box (i.e. a hot pot and a salad or 3 salad choices) costs $17, but if you go before 12pm or after 2pm to buy your meal and sign up for a revive card, you get $4 off your meal. This is an absolute steal for the amount of food you get!

Chancery Square

Chancery Square

First off, we have O-Bar snack, a Korean restaurant that gives you an option of Gimbap (a.k.a. Korean sushi) with either ramen noodles or rice cakes, all for $11.

Another option is Jump Rice which serves rice bowls and fried rice from $7.90. They have so many different types and styles of rice. The portions are so generous that often I’m finishing just over half.

Finally, my favourite is Mamak Malaysian Cuisine which is a homely Malaysian restaurant. Although the noodle and laksa dishes range from around $15-17, the roti canai (which is the star of the show and SO filling) is $12 for two pieces of fluffy roti and dahl dipping sauce.

Mr Murdoch’s

Mr Murdoch’s

This last option is a bit more vibey as Mr. Murdoch’s is a rooftop dining spot located on Fort street.

From 11:30-3pm, the express lunch option offers $12 10 inch pizzas and 3 flavours to choose from – either a mushroom pizza, a buffalo chicken (with jalapenos and ranch) or a classic pepperoni.

For a fun, cheap and cheerful catch up with a view, this is a great pick.

Cyclone Gabrielle: Gabrielle has Passed But Her Impact Remains

As you’re aware, cyclone Gabrielle devastated parts of New Zealand. Between 6 to 16 February, the severe tropical cyclone tumbled its way across the world and made a significant impact on cities in the North Island of New Zealand.

As a woman who has grown up in New Zealand, I have never seen weather of this sort (with the earlier flash floods that Auckland had faced a week prior).

Read our earlier piece on Cyclone Gabrielle here: Cyclone Gabrielle: Sending Love to Our People of Aotearoa. One idea that is really honed in on, is that New Zealanders are resilient. They care deeply about one another, and the sense of community as a nation is strong. We’ve seen this time and time again – through COVID-19, through the Christchurch mosque shootings, and now, with the devastation this cyclone has brought.

The way in which Gabrielle ravaged New Zealand was inequitable. Regions like Hawke’s Bay and Gisborne were completely demolished and sent back to an archaic and almost apocalyptic way of living for a few days with no cell reception, no internet, no clean water and no power.

Hawke's Bay post Cyclone Gabrielle
Hawke’s Bay post Cyclone Gabrielle

My partner was in Gisborne for work when the cyclone hit… I didn’t have contact with him for 5 days and my mind was running loops around the worst case scenario. Was he impacted by the cyclone severely? Did he have enough tinned and canned food? What were they doing? Were they able to work? When I finally heard from him (after he connected to a Star Link on a truck that had it) we caught up on the events of the last few days. Pak ‘N Save and other grocers had no eftpos terminals so ordinary residents turned to looting for food and supplies. Nobody could get in contact with loved ones, homes were destroyed and so many people were displaced.

New Zealand well and truly had never experienced loss on this scale. It’s sad to say that the ramifications of cyclone Gabrielle were beyond expectations and extremely significant. Reports are that the death toll is only rising as days go by.

Wigan Bridge in Gisborne

As we hit the one month mark from the cyclone, it’s important to remember that people still need our help. The roads to the Hawke’s Bay from Auckland are still severely destroyed, people are displaced without homes and belongings.

As I sit in my house in Auckland writing this, I think about all the people who still need love, support and a helping hand.

If you want to reach out and do your part, here are some great ways to donate:

  1. Red Cross New Zealand Disaster Relief Fund – a fund established to help assist with natural disaster recovery.
  1. Hawke’s Bay Foundation – a special fund established to help the worst hit region by the cyclone.
  1. SPCA – helping rescue and look after displaced animals impacted by the cyclone.
  1. Givealittle donation page with specific people and stories that need assistance.
  1. Red Cross New Zealand’s flood response accepting donations of money and clothes.

WOMAN+’s TV Watch List

We are heading into Autumn, and the nights are getting colder which means you need to have a good tv show to keep you company!

As a woman who loves good television I thought it would be appropriate to round up some of my top quality watches that are the right mix of clever, well-written and just downright addictive.

So to get you through the autumnal evenings, here’s our list of 5 absolutely captivating TV shows that you should add to your favourites immediately.

The Last of Us

the last of us

The 2023 release “The Last Of Us” is a post apocalyptic drama television airing on HBO (and HBO is the pinnacle of good TV).

An adaption of the video game “The Last of Us”, the story follows Joel (Pedro Pascal) as he escorts a teenager across this post apocalyptic world where inhabitants are infected by a mutated fungus. This is a story of heartbreak and sadness, as their journey is far from smooth sailing.

Currently in the middle of the first season, “The Last Of Us” offers a great insight into living in a post apocalyptic world and the realities of how societies may have to deal with the fall out and rebuild.

Kaleidoscope

kaleidoscope

In January of this year, Netflix released an American heist drama television series which gained immediate notoriety for its shuffled order of play.

The story follows a master thief and his hand-picked and carefully curated crew as they attempt a heist worth $7 billion.

Each member has their own past and reasons to partake, but what makes it far more exciting is that each Netflix watcher will get a random order in which the episodes play, meaning that the method by which you unpack the mystery is scrambled.

It’s important to pay attention and pick up the pieces as ultimately, betrayal and greed undermine their plans.

Shrinking

Shrinking

Jason Segal is back in “Shrinking” on AppleTV+!

This January 2023 dramatic comedy follows a grieving therapist as he starts to be brutally honest with his clients and tells them what he thinks rather than following the ethical norms of being a therapist. The result of this? The lives of his patients, and himself, begin to change extremely dramatically.

This show has darker themes delivered in an earnest and honest way which makes it fun and compelling to follow.

Extrapolations

Extrapolations

“Extrapolations” is set to air on March 17 on Apple TV+ but is on my watch list for a NUMBER of reasons.

It has a star studded cast – I’m talking Meryl Streep, Kit Harrington, Tobey Maguire, Gemma Chan and Edward Norton. But more than a list of familiar faces, the premise of the show has me beyond excited.

“Extrapolations” appears to be a very black mirror-esque show that has bleak views on our future. The premise of the show follows 8 people’s lives as the planet is rapidly changing due to the effects of climate change. It focuses on how this affects love, faith, work and family on a human scale.

Poker Face

Poker Face

This murder mystery comedy drama aired at the end of January 2023 and is stylized as a “case-of-the-week” murder show. With only 9 episodes in season 1, it’s short and sweet and has a compellingly addictive performance by Natasha Leone.

Scoring 99% on Rotten Tomatoes, it has taken fans by surprise and become an increasingly  addictive watch.

The premise of the show follows Charlie Cale, who can determine when somebody is lying. As she road trips around the country, she encounters characters and crimes that she just needs to solve.

The story, script and the fast pace makes this an easy yet addictive watch to add to your list!

Book Review: The Power Of Letting Go

As humans, it’s in our inherent nature to hold on to something and take things personally. I know that I fall victim to this behaviour pattern more often than not; it’s easy to hold a grudge and be mad about something rather than turning over a clean slate.

While it’s good to have a backbone, there’s also power in letting go of things that don’t serve you or aren’t conducive to your growth.

John Purkiss’ self help book entitled “The Power Of Letting Go” has helped me focus on both why it’s important to let go, and how to let go in some situations.

What really drew me to this book was how helpful and practical it is. It helps you dictate the narrative of your own life by giving you practical solutions to clean up negative tendencies and self-dialogue, and gives you real life techniques to make your life more enjoyable. These little changes really can go a long way.

Purkiss hones in on the idea that by letting go of things, you live life in a far more intuitive way. You live with a bit more of a natural flow instead of holding severe attachment to things and being stuck in a particular way of thinking or behaving. Letting go is ultimately one of the best things you can do for yourself because it helps in absolutely any scenario. If you’re feeling stuck at work, in a relationship, or replaying an awkward incident again and again in your head, “letting go” will help you move past it.

So what does “letting go” actually mean? In its rawest form, it means to release something. It could mean that you stop thinking about something that’s happened, release emotions associated with something and move on.

In this book, Purkiss explores the stages of “letting go” as a state of mind rather than associating it to a specific scenario.

Purkiss says that stage one is being present and enjoying each moment. Purkiss notes that If you’re somewhere with people, it’s important to whole-heartedly be present. Things can easily make you distracted and in your head when you’re out and about with people, meaning you miss what’s in front of you as you’re focussed on something else in your head. This is a common tendency for overthinkers. For me, when I’m out with friends, I like to put my phone on do not disturb and not get easily distracted. It helps me feed in to conversations happening, contribute and make the outing memorable.

Stage two is letting go of the thoughts that keep you stuck. Many of us have those moments we go back to that make us want to curl up into a tiny ball and hide. Or some of us may have negative and limiting self talk/beliefs that we have that hold us in our place. It may be that we can never find a better partner than the one we have, or that we aren’t good at our jobs, or that we aren’t worth the pay rise. Eradicating self-limiting beliefs and dialogue is such a powerful way to increase your own self confidence.

The next stage is letting go of the pain that ruins your life. This has a lot to do with trauma that we may hold, which for some is far more significant than others. Purkiss offers actual techniques to let go of deeply rooted pain. He asks you to not recall or talk about the experience but just feel the pain that this event brought you. He noted that a lot of people can locate the pain which is why they are triggered by things later in life. He suggests a technique called completion, which involves you imagining that you’re back in that situation and then reliving what happened in order to feel all the suppressed emotions. Once you feel them, you control the emotions associated with the experience, thereby causing them to lose their hold over you. This is called reliving to relieve.

Finally, Purkiss says that the last stage is to surrender and tune into something which is far more intelligent than your brain; your intuition. By living freely and being able to let things go, we live far more in flow which is the baseline for a powerful life.

So the next time you’re feeling like holding a grudge, I urge you to pick up this book by John Purkiss that will change the way you react and receive everything around you!

Rihanna’s Back: A Woman That Can Do It All

Rihanna is objectively an icon.

Robyn Rihanna Fenty has been in the music game since her debut single ‘Pon De Replay’ was released in 2005. As a child, I was mesmerized by this teenager who was beautiful beyond words, made music with a Barbadian twist and had such a unique flair.

Rihanna was signed to Jay Z’s def jam records when she was 16 years old and after only a year, ‘Pon De Replay’ was released. Her propulsion into stardom was imminent and immediate. Shortly after, in 2007, she released ‘Umbrella’ which was a chart-topping single that catapulted her into a globally renowned star and made her a household name. Earning her first Grammy for this song, we knew she was a force to be reckoned with.

Between 2005 to 2016, Rihanna released eight studio albums and for us millennials, we really got to grow up with her. We had “This is Rihanna” and “Music of the Sun” which served as an introduction to the star as the sweet girl Rihanna who made lighter music, meanwhile, “Good GIrl Gone Bad” reflected a phase that inspired our favourite bad gal Riri. Aptly named, “Rated R” followed the same bad gal trajectory before “Loud” was released – one of my favourite Rihanna albums and had some of her biggest hits like “Love the way you lie” and “Only girl”. Rihanna’s final album to date, “Anti” was far more dark, sultry and adult.

In this time, Rihanna was a singer, actress and became a fashion and makeup mogul with the release of Savage by Fenty and Fenty Beauty.

When Rihanna launched Fenty Beauty in 2017, it was embraced enthusiastically and well received because of its inclusivity and diversity (offering over 40 shades of foundation).

As Rihanna became older over time, fans grew restless as no new music on her own accord was released since ‘Anti’ in 2016. Rihanna focussed on having a family, with the birth of her son to A$ap Rocky, and growing her makeup brand.

When Rihanna announced that she was coming out of retirement to perform at the superbowl in 2023, fans around the world were overwhelmed with joy. As a fan who has had the privilege of watching her live twice, I was also extremely excited. People theorized what she would perform and when.

Fans criticized her performance as being underwhelming on the basis that she wasn’t dancing as much as she would have, and that the show was really stolen by her dancers in an all white ensemble choreographed by New Zealand’s very own Paris Goebel. I beg to disagree.

Rihanna’s performance was a touch of artistic genius which represented her metamorphosis into a mother over the last few decades. She announced her second pregnancy live on stage, which in my perspective, honed in on how her priority has now shifted to motherhood and being with her family. With A$ap Rocky doting on her from the crowd, this much was clear.

Her set list starting with songs like “B* Better Have My Money,” but progressed to songs like “We Found Love,” to “All Of The Lights” and finally concluded with “Diamonds” – illustrating her journey over time and the different phases of Rihanna that we’ve seen. Ending on “Diamonds,” in my view, was to make the point that despite her being out of the limelight, her light will never be dimmed and she will always have a big fandom. Her voice was also far more mature, as a 35 year old, than the twenties Rihanna we loved to watch perform. You could tell that her voice was far more refined, especially as she finally hit that note in “Work” so effortlessly, which she had seemed to miss in the past.

Her subtle Fenty Beauty product placement by Rihanna touching herself up using her Invisimatte Instant Setting + Blotting Powder was a nod to the fact that she can do it all, and that she’s now a mother and businesswoman (with searches for the product soaring by 833% after the performance).

She also performed at the 95th annual Academy Awards on March 12, 2023 – gracing the stage with a glowing smile, her pregnant belly and performing her track lift me up for the soundtrack of Wakanda Forever.

Rihanna performing in black diamante

It looks like 2023 is the year that Rihanna graces us with mature, well-sung live performances after a 7 year break. 2023 is the year of Rihanna because she’s shown us that as a mother, musician or beauty mogul… she really can do it all.

The Oscars: Why Michelle Yeoh’s Win Is So Important

The Academy Awards (also known as the Oscars) was back for its 95th time last night on 12 March 2023! Being one of the most prestigious award ceremonies, the Oscars are awards presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to an actor, actress, director, producer or film production crew in relation to a particular category.

The Oscars are an extremely newsworthy event every year as buzz generates around what people are going to be wearing, who’s been nominated for what and on what basis. I’m not here to talk about dresses or the men getting awards though.

This year, in particular, there was notable contention, buzz and speculation for who would win best actress. The best actress award is given to an actress who has delivered an outstanding performance in a leading role in a film released that year.

The nominees for the 2023 Oscar for best actress was:

  • Ana De Armas – “Blonde”
  • Cate Blanchett – “Tar”
  • Andrea Riseborough – “To Leslie”
  • Michelle Williams – “The Fabelmans”
  • Michelle Yeoh – “Everything Everywhere All At Once”

When the nominations were released, unfortunately, most of the nominees weren’t considered front runners as fans and critics alike decided the real race was between Cate Blanchett and Michelle Yeoh.

Australian Blanchett had previously won two Academy Awards in her time, and the press release and her outstanding performance in the film “Tar” generated an Oscar buzz from the very moment it came out. Blanchett is 53 years old, showing that there really is no time limit on the success of your career. “Tar” is a 2022 psychological drama starring Blanchett as Lydia Tar, a well renowned conductor who believes that all elements are conspiring against her. Her performance is sharp, compelling and captivating to say the least as she makes the world of western classical music appear sinister and dark.

Michelle Yeoh, a 60 year old Malaysian actress was nominated for her leading performance in “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” a 2022 Sci-Fi adventure film premised on an interdimensional rupture which unravels reality and creates a new but unlikely hero to fight dangers from the ruptured multiverse. Interestingly, “Everything Everywhere All At Once” received the most nominations for the Oscars coming in at 11. This win in particular is so important for Asian communities as it won categories from best screenplay, to best supporting lead actor for Ke He Quan who grew up in a refugee camp after fleeing from Vietnam as a child.

Michelle Yeoh ended up winning the award for best actress and in fact made history by being the first Asian actress to win in this category. Her victory comes 90 years after Luise Rainer, a white actress, had won in the same category for playing a Chinese Villager. Supporters have felt that this moment was important for so many reasons, but also to show the progress of the industry.

Yeoh has been hot in demand, even at the age of 60 years old, since her standout role as the mother in “Crazy Rich Asians.” Her portrayal of her character in “Everything Everywhere All At Once” is no small feat – particularly after storming this award season and taking not only the Oscar but also the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild awards.

Her win is inspirational to minority communities around the world, but particularly the Asian community as many feel finally getting the representation they deserve. In her speech, she signed off with, “Thank you for all the little boys and girls who look like me tonight…” Congratulations to Michelle Yeoh, and all the other winners of the night.

New Zealand’s Top Wedding Photographers

Wedding photographers are so much more than just vendors. You can expect a lifelong connection with your photographer, just as they will remember capturing your sweet day forever. Wedding photographers and videographers have valuable experience that makes them absolutely worth the investment. While it can be tempting to take onboard a cousin’s friend who may have a flash camera, you want to feel confident that your day will be documented beautifully as your photos will be with you for a lifetime. Photographers are there to comprehend lighting, posing, composition, and editing, among other things – they are the artists making art for your big day.

You can trust that every special moment will be captured, making you feel at ease in front of the camera and putting to rest all nerves that were festering! Going with a photographer that has an impressive portfolio gives you the assurance that your wedding photos will have a consistency that only the best know how to achieve, brilliantly. As a wedding florist, I feel I have the inside scoop on the photographers who are doing incredible work. Below are my current favourite kiwi wedding photographers (though this is always changing!). Whenever I see one of these weddings on my feed, I feel such infectious joy for the couples.

Sapphire Studios

Everyone’s favourite photography team at the moment is Sapphire Studios. Killing the game with their passion for photography, projects, and creativity. Their work focuses on bringing vitality to creating real and appealing visual narratives. I have such a soft spot for analog shooting combined with digital, and Sapphire does just that. While located in Auckland, Sapphire loves capturing moments all throughout New Zealand.

Danelle Bohane

Danelle has twelve years of experience and over 300 weddings under her belt. Her work is a tribute to making everlasting photos that capture the undivided connection between two souls and those around them. Capturing love, raw emotion and infinite beauty, Danelle’s photography will bring you tears of sweet joy each time you look back on your day.

Kate Roberge Photography

Kate describes herself as a cat mum, a lover of breakfast, fashion and film. She’s an INCREDIBLE wedding, elopement and editorial photographer based in Queenstown. “Nothing inspires or excites me more than the beautiful connection and story two people can create together.” While scrolling through my already heavily wedding-themed Instagram feed, Kate’s stunning imagery constantly pops up, and you can best believe I always stop to double tap.

Amanda Thomas

Your wedding day should be full of joy, emotion, and laughter. Amanda has a naturally fun and relaxed approach to wedding photography, ensuring her clients simply have fun behind the camera over their day.  Amanda is incredible at capturing emotion and every single special moment. With a tonne of experience behind her and some stunning weddings, you can feel assured in her skilful hands.

Ryan Watts

Ryan’s work is a tribute to storytelling and timeless photography. With an emphasis on natural and relaxed captures, Ryan is on the hunt for the moments that matter and will consistently surprise you with the hidden moments you didn’t know were there. From the early morning coffees to the visitors ripping up the dance floor, the quiet times of introspection and the moments of outright laughter, Ryan likes to tell the narrative so the stories of your day will always live on.

Bayly & Moore

A love story in itself, Soph and Si are the dynamic duo who have been shooting together since the day they met. Fast forward, Bayly & Moore have found a love of storytelling through their wedding photography and have never looked back. Creating beautiful imagery across stunning scenes across New Zealand, these guys are the real deal.

Ash Muir

Ash has been a wedding photographer for eight years and is based in Hamilton,  though she travels extensively for her events. Ash Muir is passionate about bringing your special day to life and makes strong connections with her brides and grooms prior to and during their big day. She captures every unique angle and does so seamlessly.

New Zealand is so lucky to have such beautiful venues and vendors to make all your wedding fantasies come to life. Not to mention the pure talent from all the teams above that will capture all the beauty entailed. Stay tuned as we continue covering NZ’s top wedding florists, spaces and bridal designers here at Woman+. In the meantime, Check out Nosy Parker for some sweet wedding photography inspiration.

New Zealand’s Top Wedding Florists

It’s a big statement, but I stand by it: your flowers will be one of the most exciting aspects of your wedding day. While you can readily design a menu concept and a colour scheme for invites, you never know how your flowers will look on the big day, which is both thrilling and nerve-racking! As a wedding florist myself and being there with brides from the first consult to the big day, you want to feel confident that your florist knows you and your vision. Don’t leave it to chance! I highly urge you to choose a fantastic florist whose work you like and can see yourself in their portfolio, and you’ll be in for one of the finest surprises of your life.

Whether you’re eloping with a simple bouquet and boutonniere or spending half your wedding budget on flowers, this list is a goldmine. I have had the honour of working with a number of these teams and I can hand on heart say, you will be amazed at what they can do. They are absolutely New Zealand’s finest. The florists below cover everything from quirky to flamboyant, romantic to creative. At the very least, following these accounts before your big day will immediately make your Instagram feed so beautiful.

Michele Coomey

I’m happiest when I have an armful of flowers and a wedding to plan! Michele Coomey has been the woman to watch for the past number of years in the floral scene. With over 20 years of experience and hundreds of jobs under her belt, it’s no surprise that Michele is featured in this lineup. All of Michele’s work is inspired by nature. Her designs have meaning and purpose. Not simply following trends but rather capturing the personal style and integrating it with the location to create a mood and a visually stimulating floral experience for every event.

While based in Auckland, Michele takes weddings and events all the way from Northland to Bluff.

Blush Flowers

For drama, elegance and lush beauty, think Blush Flowers. Kelly and her team have brought so many bridal dreams to life and made quite the noise internationally, with Blush’s work featured on Pinterest boards worldwide. While they are the best of the best at soft pink and peachy palettes, jaws will drop once they sprinkle their colour magic into the mix.

Isadia

A personal favourite of mine is Isadia. Isabel and Lydia joined forces back in 2020 to create a fresh space of flower expertise and creativity. Isadia’s style is organic and intuitive. They are inspired by nature and capture the beauty of each season by following the distinctive shapes of the flowers and plants they create with. When it comes to their scented, fine art displays, every event is a work of art. Don’t believe me? These photos say it all.

Rose Tinted Flowers

Another personal favourite for me is Rose Tinted Flowers. For the wild and unruly bride, meet Rose Tinted Flowers. Born with a love of wild beauty Rose Tinted has curated countless weddings around Auckland and the upper North Island, designing everything from personal to lavish installations. Whether you need grand, lavish, refined or intimate, their whimsical yet contemporary florals are show-stopping.

Floral Stylist Co

Floral Stylist Co. is New Zealand’s innovative floristry response. Sue Cameron, the owner and creative director of Floral Stylist Co., sees floristry as an art form. Sue’s amazing team is composed of flower lovers, creatives, stylists, and event coordinators. Sue approaches each brief holistically, considering the colour palette and the event venue, all while ensuring perfection is delivered.

Ruth Fiona

Ruth Fiona’s inspiration comes from nature in its finest form. To produce effortlessly gorgeous flowers for spectacular weddings and events, her creative creations are driven by an aesthetic balance of adventurous colours and sumptuous textures.

With a passion for nature and a drive to make things with her hands. Ruth creates delicate and voluminous work that emphasises natural aesthetics in flower arrangements and styling. I am such a huge fan of Ruth’s no foam or chemicals approach and her love of supporting local growers for greenery and florals.

The Flower Room

Sarah Gutschlag, the Flower Room’s founder and senior floral creative, and the Flower Room team have been creating exquisite flowers for spectacular weddings in the Queenstown region for over 23 years. Their appreciation of the Central Otago scenery and the wonderful seasons is easy to notice. Their style is simple but elegant, and brilliantly blends colour, texture into pure magic.

Astrology Fix: Pisces Season

Pisces season; the season of turmoil, increased emotional intuition and self-reflection.

Pisces season is my favourite astrological season, being my home sun sign. As a self proclaimed astrology queen, I had to discuss the vibe of this season. It started when the sun entered the mystical water sign of Pisces on February 19th, and will end on exit on or around March 20.

Pisces is the last sign of the zodiac, making it intrinsically more intuitive and empathetic than the other signs of the zodiac. It also embodies the lessons and characteristics of all 11 signs which come before it.

The sign of Pisces is ruled by the planet of Neptune. This means that by its very nature, Pisces is compassionate, emotional, intuitive, deeply feeling and slightly psychic. Neptune is the planet of inspiration and ideas, and Pisces is the ruler of wisdom. As a mutable sign, it’s known to be flexible and adaptable and hold a willingness to learn. So far, Pisces season 2023 has had me called to focus on my own self-reflective, healing personality. Being part way through Pisces season, I have felt far more emotional and dreamy than I have in the last 6 months, and extremely in tune with the energy around me and how I’m making people feel.

What sets apart Pisces season in 2023 is that Saturn is also in Pisces (something that hasn’t happened since 1996). As a Pisces who was born in 1996, this is a pretty rare orbit. Saturn is the planet of karma and restriction, whilst the sign of Pisces is inherently generous and compassionate. This transit means that in general, what’s an emotional and intuitive time may actually be a resurgence of past storylines and unfinished business coming back around. Moreover, this will impact everybody because it calls to action that new lessons need to be learned, and to stop perceiving things to be a certain way but move past this to actually put things into action.

This Saturn orbit is extra spicy because it will be reunited with Neptune. Both planets haven’t been in Pisces together since 1847-1849. Neptune made its way to Pisces again in 2012, and will remain there until 2026. Similarly, Saturn once in Pisces will remain in Pisces until 2026. The effect of this is that the planet of inspiration will be put through the ringer of restriction and boundaries. It’ll be important to focus on your own mechanisms to deal with stress, overwhelming factors and anxiety.

While Pisces season will impact all signs in different ways, the mutable signs of the Zodiac being Pisces, Gemini, Virgo and Sagittarius will be the most impacted.

For Pisces, although it’s an exciting time being the birth month, this comes with its own anxieties and stress. This may call to reflect on the direction of your life, but this reflection will also be accompanied by a fresh burst of energy and a new perspective.

For Gemini and Virgo, this could manifest as more challenging and call you to reflect on a crisis or force you to deal with a situation that’s been ignored.

For Sagittarius, this time is important to focus more on responsibility for yourself and tend to deeper parts of your home and personal life.

Whatever Pisces season has in store for you – you can get through it!

A Look into the History of International Women’s Day

International Women’s Month (celebrated in March) and International Women’s Day (celebrated on the 8th of March) is an important global holiday marking the progress of women’s rights. It serves as a pertinent turning point in women’s rights and suffrage movements, bringing attention to various issues that women have faced over time (such as gender equality, fair workplace rights) and currently face (reproductive rights and so on).

Why March? The earliest mentions of International Women’s Day traces back to a common story told in New York City in 1857 on March 8. Female textile workers marched out in a protest against sweatshop working conditions and a demand for women’s suffrage as the working conditions toward women were extremely unfair. This was the first organised strike by working women in the Lower East Side of New York, and was an inspiring story of unionism. Unfortunately, there is little historical evidence confirming this story, despite its wide circulation.

December 1991. Image by © David Roth/Corbis

Although it’s difficult to pinpoint the exact moment in which the movement was catapulted, numerous things for women’s rights happened. In the 1890’s, New Zealand was the first country to give women the right to vote in parliamentary elections. This inspired the universal female suffrage movement and garnered significant international attention and support.

The true origin of choosing March 8 allegedly comes from the Second Internationalist Socialist Women’s Conference in 1910. Here, activists gathered, including an incredibly well-known German activist named Clara Zetkin who was part of a Socialist Women’s group wanted a date to help solidify the rights of women and chose this date to honour a worker’s strike in Russia.

By the 1970’s, feminism globally was a supported movement, and the united nations were looking to formally sponsor an annual celebration of International Women’s Day and amplify the dissemination of information around women’s rights and history. In the 1980’s, President Jimmy Carter of the United States issued a presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8th to be Women’s history week. Shortly thereafter, Congress declared March as National Women’s history month in perpetuity – meaning that March was now the month marked in honouring the role of American women in history. This became the global date to celebrate the achievements of women over time strengthened by the ratification of this by the United Nations.

Although the rights of women have significantly evolved over time, there are still a number of countries with harsh sanctions against women. In western and fully developed countries, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development have put out a study solidifying that as of 2022, despite now being a major presence in the paid labour force in all regions of the world, there is a significant gap between average wages of women and men. Evidence suggests that in western countries the compensation for a particular type of job is related to gender rather than education, experience or expertise.

So this International Women’s Month, as we celebrate the women who have fought tirelessly and courageously for equality. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the women who have helped in the early days of rights, but also for the continuous call to change demanded by evolving circumstances over time (i.e., the need to still focus on gender inequality in the workplace).

Show your support on social media for the cause by sharing posts and having an open dialogue about women’s causes, advocate for gender equality in your workplace, and even head out for a coffee date with the ladies in your office!

Everything You Need To Know: New Drop from Hair By Sam McKnight

The cult brand, Hair by Sam McKnight, responsible for the iconic Cool Girl Texture Mist and the Modern Hair Spray, is back with one of the biggest hair launches of the year – and we have all the details.

If you didn’t know, Sam Mcknight became Princess Diana’s hair stylist in 1990 after working as a session stylist at Vogue. Since then, he has continued to work his hair magic on celebrity megastars such as Naomi Campbell, Bella Hadid and Kate Moss. If that wasn’t enough, he also boasts an incredible list of collaborations with fashion houses such as Chanel and Fendi. With a resume like that, we’d trust Sam McKnight with any hair emergency.

If you want soft, shiny, nourished hair, follow along to see which products will work for you.

Hair by Sam McKnight Light Range

Don’t let the internet fool you into thinking that you shouldn’t wash your hair often. The truth is, it’s different for everybody, and you should do what feels right for your hair. For example, you may like to wash your hair on an everyday basis. However, it is crucial to employ the right products, so you don’t end up with a dry scalp or brittle hair.

Enter the Light Cleanse and Light Nourish from Hair by Sam McNight. This shampoo and conditioner is specifically designed for everyday use. Using ingredients like velvet flower and nettle leaf extract, you can get a good clean without stripping the hair dry. Coupled with Aquaxyl, strengthen the skin on your scalp for a lightweight cleanse that keeps your hair smooth and scalp healthy.

We also recommend these products if you have super fine hair. Using a shampoo and conditioner that is too heavy or moisturising can reduce volume and create the appearance of oily hair. Work smart, not hard.

Hair By Sam McKnight Rich Range

Sam McKnight Rich Range
Hair by Sam McKnight, Rich Cleanse Nourishing Shampoo $62 NZD, Rich Nourish Conditioner $62 NZD.

Did you know that consistent hair care between hair appointments can save you a lot of money and time? Salon day might make you feel beautiful and invigorate your mood, but what’s the point if you don’t treat your hair with love and respect?

The Rich Cleanse Nourishing Shampoo and the Rich Nourish Conditioner by Hair by Sam McKnight is deeply moisturising and formulated with colour-protecting ingredients like quinoa pro. Instead of depositing globs of oil onto the hair and scalp, vitamin E and castor oil replenish the hair’s natural oils for a genuinely hydrated result and super soft look.

Hair by Sam McKnight, Light Cleanse Hair and Scalp Shampoo $62 NZD, Rich Nourish Conditioner $62 NZD.

Feel free to mix and match between the Light and Rich Range. We recommend using the Light Cleanse and the Deep Nourish for a balanced hair care routine for those with fine hair but a lot of it. On the other hand, using the Rich Cleanse in conjunction with the Light Nourish is perfect for those with thick and damaged hair.

Hair by Sam McKnight Curl Range

Sam McKnight Curl Cleanse
Hair by Sam McKnight, Curl Cleanse, $76 NZD.

The Curl Cleanse is a must-have for curly hair types. The unique cream formula will cleanse your hair while keeping your curls or coils bouncy and defined.

It is a conditioning shampoo that tames frizz without weighing the hair down. The Curl Cleanse strikes the perfect balance between cleansing the hair and locking in the moisture by using sustainable ingredients such as jackfruit extract. This rich protein contains vitamin A and iron for regenerative hair growth and healthy strands.

Additionally, if you’re on a journey to revive the natural curls in your hair pattern, using the Curl Cleanse can deliver essential ingredients that will bring back life to your hair.

A Split End Treatment That Feels Invisible and Keeps Your Hair Invincible

Sam McKnight Happy Endings
Sam by Hair McKnight, Happy Endings Nourishing Balm, $80 NZD.

Say goodbye to crusty hair with one simple solution. Happy Endings by Sam McNight is a WOMAN+ Favourite. This super lightweight serum texture feels and works like hyaluronic acid. Packed with pro-vitamin B5, shine-boosting Vegebead and shea butter, Happy Endings will nourish your hair from the inside out.

If you heat style your hair daily or have dark hair that is beginning to look worn down around the ends, make sure you use a serum like Happy Endings. It is clinically proven to seal up to 50% of split ends on the first try, and you can use it to defluff and defrizz the hair after styling.

Looking For a New Hair Mask?

Sam McKnight Deeper Love
Hair by Sam Mcknight, Deeper Love Intense Treatment Mask, $107 NZD.

For those who wash their hair regularly, keeping a hair mask on standby will revive your hair when necessary. On the other hand, an effective (but expensive) way to keep your hair incredibly nourished is to use a hair mask in place of your conditioner. Whatever the purpose, the Deeper Love Hair Mask can do it all.

Formulated with Hair by Sam McKnight’s unique RepHair and Crodabond, Deeper Love seals split ends and boosts the hair’s resilience. This product is clinically proven to seal 50% of split ends with one use and makes the hair stronger after six treatments.

Hot Tip: Your hair is much more likely to absorb ingredients in its wet state. Using an in-shower treatment along with your serums and oils will form a consistent cycle within your hair routine.

Beachy waves in a Bottle: Sundaze Beach Spray

Sam McNight Sundaze Sea Spray
Hair by Sam McNight, Sundaze Sea Spray, $58 NZD.

Did you know that Sam Mcknight handled all the beautiful models for Charlotte Tilbury’s Beautiful Skin Campaign? We are absolutely living for Kate Moss’ hair! Tousled, chic and voluminous – here’s how to achieve supermodel beachy waves with no heat.

Work Sundaze into 75% dried hair and loosely braid random sections. If you need to speed up the process, blow dry the braids with cold air. Once you release the braids, you will be left with the most effortless, voluminous, textured waves that will last you all day. When you try this out, you’ll notice that your hair will remain soft and shiny. This is due to the pro vitamin b and hibiscus flower extract which isn’t so common in other sea salt sprays.

Additionally, Sundaze is a unique salt spray due to the pro-vitamin b and hibiscus extract infusion. As a result, you can get that beachy look without the salty, crunchy effect.

All the Tips and Tricks to Make Your Wine Last

Every wine drinker will have experienced the dilemma of craving a glass of vino but not wanting to see the bottom of the bottle. It’s a special kind of heart pang when you let a good drop go to waste.

Fortunately, we have some simple tips and tricks to help you prolong the life of your favourite wines, beginning with understanding why wine goes bad in the first place. Wine needs a careful balance of oxygen exposure throughout the fermentation process. Once opened, too much exposure will convert your wine into vinegar!

From times to temperature, here’s everything you need to know about storing and keeping wine.

Confetti with wine glasses clinking

How Long Will Wine Keep?

Red and white wines can be stored unopened for up to a year. For that bottle of champagne or sparkling wine, only about six months (keep this in mind when putting a bottle aside to save for a special occasion). But once you pop that bottle, its shelf life drastically changes. Because there are acids in white wines, this helps the bottles stay fresh for around three to four days. Red wines should be finished in one day or two. Champagne and sparkling wine will only keep in the fridge for one day.

To savour your wine for a full week, the trick is to remove as much air as possible. Tools like these vacuum pumps below give the bottle a seal so tight it’s tricked into thinking it’s back to square one. While it does hinder the taste slightly, which isn’t ideal, it can add a few days to the life of your wine.

How to Tell if Your Wine Is Bad

First, examine the colour. Red wines may darken to brown and brick tones, while white wines will typically deepen and become yellow. If you want to brave it (though old wine is not unsafe to drink!) Red wines that have gone “off” will have flattened tastes and aromas, replacing its bright flavours with nutty, sherry-like characteristics. Whites will have a sour, vinegary flavour.

How to Store Unopened Wine

Lay Bottles Sideways

Wine lovers say that corks must remain wet and inflated to maintain an airtight barrier that protects the wine from oxygen and outside odours. While lying on its side, the cork stays in consistent contact with the wine. On the other hand, wine bottles with screw-on closures or rubber or plastic corks may withstand standing up.

Choose a Dark Place

It is said that bright light can numb the taste of your wines. Even though most bottles are made with tinted glass, which provides some UV protection, there is still a chance of exposure.

Keep It Steady If You Can’t Keep It Cool

No need for fancy wine chillers around here. Avoid keeping bottles in areas with intense heat or where temperatures change. Experts are against storing a collection in the refrigerator (wine chillers are not as cold as a fridge). Also, overhead lights and refrigerator exhaust emit heat, and frequent shaking might impair the taste.

How to Keep Opened Wine

Re-Cork Immediately

Your first line of defence is to re-cork when you know you won’t finish it. The key is to reduce as much oxygen as possible, keeping your precious bottle fresher for longer.

A hot tip from us is to replace the cork with the same end in the bottle (the other end has been exposed to mould and odours). If the cork won’t go in smoothly, cut a notch at the bottom on each side with the corkscrew blade, or pick up a reusable rubber stopper from a wine store for around $8.

Back to the Fridge

All wines, even reds, survive longer when kept refrigerated after opening. You want to keep your open wine bottle out of direct sunlight and store it below room temperature. The oxidation of the bottle will slow down and maintain its exceptional taste.

How to Clean Your Gold and Silver Jewellery

While you’re drooling over your new accessories, it’s easy to forget that their sparkle will fade over time. But all it takes is a bit of maintenance and you’ll be able to retain your jewellery’s luminosity for longer than a lifetime.

Cleaning eliminates body oils, smudges, and grime, but it also gives a heads-up for when a clasp or structural piece may be wearing.

With these three simple jewellery-cleaning practices, you can avoid tarnish and keep your gold and silver looking like new! Bear in mind that the way you clean silver differs from gold and jewels made with fragile gemstones or materials, such as pearls, emeralds, shells, and opals, require special care and attention since they scratch and shatter easily. Let’s get into how you can clean jewellery at home!

Caring for Silver Jewellery

Silver Ring on Hand with Navy Ruffled Sleeves
Karen Walker

One main tip that I was taught as a teenager when I began to collect silver rings was the importance of storing them in felt. Keeping jewellery separated and in felt helps to stop tarnishing and moisture buildup. Here is a very simple method for cleaning your silver trinkets.

What you need

  • Baking soda
  • Salt
  • Tinfoil
  • Pan
  • Water
  • Microfibre Cloth

STEP 1: Line your pan with tinfoil.

STEP 2: Arrange the jewellery on the tin foil.

STEP 3: Sprinkle the jewellery with baking soda and salt. 1-2 tablespoons of each should be enough to coat the pieces.

STEP 4: Fill the pan halfway with boiling hot water. The baking soda and salt will dissolve in the water, forming a tarnish-removing solution.

STEP 5: Let your silver soak in the solution for 5 minutes. Then dry with your microfibre cloth.

STEP 6: Enjoy your clean jewellery!

Oh, by the way, if you are a sucker for silver pieces, don’t sleep on PERA MAY!

Caring for Gold Jewellery

Contact with body fluids, lotions, and cosmetics can cause gold jewellery to lose its sparkle. It does not tarnish as easily as silver, but if gold jewellery is worn often, it may need to be cleaned once a month. Avoid wearing gold jewellery in chlorine pools and take it off when cleaning with harsh chemicals.

What you need

  • Warm Water
  • Dishwashing detergent
  • Bowl (big enough to accommodate your pieces)
  • Toothbrush with soft bristles
  • Cotton cloth

STEP 1: Combine the cleaning solution and water.

Fill your bowl halfway with warm water, enough to thoroughly cover the jewellery, and pop a few drops of dishwashing liquid. Give the liquid a few swirls to combine.

STEP 2:   Place the jewellery gently in the solution and soak it for at least 20 minutes. Try to separate the pieces to avoid scratching.

STEP 3: After 20 minutes is up, heavily ornate jewellery may require further assistance to regain its radiance. Scrub any hard-to-reach, recessed places using a soft-bristled toothbrush or brush.

STEP 4:  Take the jewellery out of the solution, rinse it with water, and dry it with a soft cotton cloth. Once the gold dries, buff it again with the fabric. Avoid paper towels for this! Gold jewellery, especially high-karat gold, can be scratched by paper towels.

Caring for Pearl Jewellery

Pearls are delicate, natural stones that often scratch. The visible section of the pearl is a natural nacre made up of hundreds of layers.  Poor maintenance and care might result in chipping and cracks on the surface of the pearl.

What you need

  • Warm water
  • Dishwashing detergent
  • Bowl
  • Two cotton cloths

STEP 1:  In a large enough bowl to fit your pearl jewellery, combine warm water and a few drops of dishwashing liquid. The water should be neither too hot nor too chilly. High temperatures might harm the surface of the pearl.

STEP 2: Dip a clean cloth in a tiny amount of solution and gently wipe the pearls. A pearl ring or earrings may be submerged in the bowl, but not a necklace. Leave in the bowl for 5 minutes.  Submerging a pearl necklace can cause the thread to fray.

STEP 3:  Wipe and dab away any residual soapy water with a dry, clean cloth.

When you’re done, your clean jewellery will gleam, shine, and last for years to come.

Cervical screening: The Health Check to End All Health Checks

A fun yellow stethoscope on a pink background with a cute cut out heart.

All Magenta Brown wanted was to shag her new bloke without a condom. . . but a cervical screening gave her more than she bargained for.

This content is the 2nd story of a series. Find the first article here.

For those of you who read Woman’s special edition sex issue two years ago, I wrote a jaunty story about the time I fainted midway through my partner’s vasectomy. It happened when the doctor cauterised the operation site, and the smell of burning flesh sent me swooning to the floor.

As for the purpose of the vasectomy – well, it’s pretty obvious – he didn’t want more children, and neither did I, and because we were relishing the physical aspects of our new relationship, we also liked the idea of being able to have intercourse without contraception.

To pull my weight in that arena, I went for a smear so I could flash my “all good down there” certificate. So to assist our passion project, I made an appointment at my local medical centre. I asked to be tested for every conceivable STD, so I could shag my new fella with impunity. Also, because it transpired that my previous boyfriend had been a bit of a ratbag, I was eager to ensure I was in tip-top shape down around my gusset for my own peace of mind.

Only the nurse who usually does the smears wasn’t there, so the doctor did the honours, and in the course of her very thorough investigation, she said, “I don’t like the look of your uterus.” In spite of being mildly insulted, I allowed the doctor to schedule a scan. Within a week – bless our public health system – an appointment was made at Greenlane Hospital. I wasn’t worried, just a bit miffed that my muff was taking me from my busy freelance day. Oh, and vis-a-vis the smear, there were no STDs, thank you for asking.

At Greenlane, I said hello to a radiologist who wielded an ultrasound wand wrapped in a condom covered in lube who asked me if I wanted to insert it myself.

I was quite shocked. I certainly wouldn’t want to insert the needle if I was having a blood test, so why would I insert this dildo-esque device into my vagina? That’s not my job. But apparently that’s the question they ask these days. You have been warned.

So she’s foofing about up there and starts making a similar face to the doctor. She says “hmmmm”, then sighs a few times. She points to the screen and asks if I can see the freckles on my kidneys, although I thought we were looking at my uterus.

Cute, I think, freckles! And of course I can’t see anything on the grainy ultrasound screen, but I pretend I can see something. She says she’ll flag it and I can expect to hear from Urology. Whatever that is. Perhaps she’s taking the piss?

She continues on, takes some snaps, then removes the wand thing without asking if I wanted to take it out myself, because she’d presumably guessed I did not. Back on went my pants, the old gusset a bit gooey with lube, and life went on.

Until a letter arrived. I was booked for a CT scan, which I obediently went to. I’m not sure what I expected, but it started with a giant lure going into the back of my hand, and it hurt. The woman in charge explained that if they did go straight for a full MRI scan, not to be worried, as it just means they want to take a closer look.

“Not to worry,” she kept saying, which made me wonder if I was meant to be worried. I really liked her though – she was warm and kind, the sort of person who’d give bad news kindly. Plus her assistant was called Calypso, which I also really liked. Such a great name. Everyone here is so nice, I think, and wonder if I’ve been mildly sedated.

Into the machine I go. Two times through the doughnut and the lovely warm woman tells me I definitely don’t have cancer. I nearly fell over. I had no idea it could be cancer. I definitely should have been worried. I head home via a friend’s place, rattled that I almost had cancer, then didn’t.

As it turns out, I have benign tumours on my kidneys. Tumour is just the Greek word for growth, nothing to worry about, and I’m given some options. My favourite option is to do nothing.

At my third appointment, I meet the specialist who is also very calming. He repeats the options. I ask what he’d do if they were his kidneys. He says he can’t answer that. If they were his sister’s kidneys? What would he advise her? He said he’d tell her to have the growths removed. Does he like his sister? Yes he says, so I say let’s do it.

A week goes by. The specialist’s PA rings to ask if I still want the tumours removed. Not really, but apparently, if they get much bigger, it’s harder to get rid of them and then they can rupture – and that can be dangerous, especially if you’re travelling somewhere where medical care isn’t so flash. And I have always wanted to go trekking in Nepal.

Obediently, I attend my pre-op appointment, including an ECG (electrocardiogram) performed by two women. One is the supervisor, the other an apprentice who puts circular stickers all over my front, including my boobs, while the supervisor tells me about her five sons. She names them all and tells me all about them while the trainee fires up the machine.

The supervisor with all the children asks if I’ve ever had an ECG before. No, I reply. Are you sure, she presses in what is quite an alarming tone.

The trainee asks if I have chest pain. Not right now, I say, but I might shortly, if their palpable panic is anything to go by. They confer. They do the test again. They confer some more, I’m not too freaked out, but I can tell something is up with my heart.

“Clearly you’ve seen something. What is it,” I ask. Delta waves, the supervisor says, which sounds like something from Star Trek

They ask again if I have chest pain. No. Dizziness? No. Nausea? No. Palpitations? No, I say to all of it, but still the operation is postponed so cardiology can poke their oar in – when all I wanted was to shag my new bloke without a condom.

Long story short, the kidneys had benign tumours and now they’re gone. The heart had Wolf Parkinson White, which is like a jazz rhythm. Throughout my entire life, I’d always thought occasional palpitations were normal, but apparently I could’ve dropped dead any time since I was born.

The kidney operation was not much fun. The pre-op was awesome – four seconds of euphoria, then two shots of morphine at the other end, which retrospectively I should’ve said no to, as I spent the following week feeling very miserable. My throat was sore too, thanks to the big tube that’s jammed down there these days whenever a general anaesthetic is administered. I then spent another week feeling moderately miserable, and for some months I felt bruised inside from the tumour-blasting.

The heart was much more fascinating. I have to confess, I also enjoyed eavesdropping from behind the curtains in the cardiology ward while I waited for my turn. The relaxing drugs were also enjoyable, and I got the giggles as I was wheeled into a high tech room full of gowned medics. I stopped giggling when one of them drove a wire into my upper thigh and up to my heart. I also tried not to make idle chit-chat, as you shouldn’t distract a cardiologist who’s toying with your ticker. But to see my heart beating on a giant screen was riveting, and the relaxing drugs meant I didn’t stress at all, about the one-in-whatever chance it could all go wrong, and I’d be whisked into surgery to have a pacemaker inserted.

As for the post-operative bruise, apologies to anyone I flashed my upper thing to afterwards, but wow, what a palette. Like the eye shadows I inherited from my mum when I was in my teens.

And the moral of this story? Aside from discovering how amazing our public health system is, I say if everything with your health seems to be tickety-boo, don’t look under the hood, because you never know what sort of can of worms you might open. As for the uterus my doctor didn’t like the look of, no one’s ever said a word about it and I certainly won’t be asking about it, as I have had quite enough medical attention for one lifetime.

Five Fave Celeb Homes

Whether you’re after some inspiration or fancy a bit of a nosy into your favourite celeb’s home, WOMAN+ is here to help.

There’s something so satisfying about peeking into people’s lives, and it’s especially hard to say no when powerhouse musician Alicia Keys, or fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger willingly invite you inside. Human beings naturally have some sort of voyeuristic quality when it comes to having a gander at how the other half live. So let’s delve into some of the most opulent houses on the market.

Top 5 Favourite Celebrity Homes

David Harbour

Stranger Things star, David Harbour lives in this beautiful reconstructed New York apartment with his wife, singer, Lily Allen. This light and breezy 1,400 square-foot loft features an open plan layout with a mix of modern and old school wooden furniture. David has really done this space justice, scattering lots of books and plants everywhere. With the walls a cool crisp white and the floor Persian rug galore, David Harbour’s home is chic, sophisticated and fun.

Gwyneth Paltrow

Featuring a classic monochrome colour palette with soft blue accents and gold fixtures, Gwyneth Paltrow’s modern style home in Montecito, California feels blissfully peaceful. However as you move into the more casual living spaces of this home like the lounge room, you’re greeted with warmer tones. Beiges and soft yellows stir feelings of tranquillity and playfulness. Filled with geometric designs, and plants dotted here and there, each aspect of decor and delineation come together in harmony to create Gwyneth’s family sanctuary.

Tommy Hilfiger

Tommy and Dee Hilfiger spend the days they’re not working, lounging, in a beautiful Mediterranean style pad in Palm Beach, Florida. Sprawling bougainvillaea flowers climb up the coral stone walls and add the perfect flora detail to their bohemian yet modern vibe. Their divine dining area works with the arched ceilings and grandiose columns that are found all throughout the 2006 build. The Hilfiger’s have filled their outdoor area with cane furniture and an outdoor fireplace. The back porch looks out onto their personal dock where they keep their boats and jet skis. The indoor-outdoor flow of this house is truly flawless. Talk about luxury!

Flea – Red Hot Chilli Peppers

Is there anything that screams, “I am a rockstar” louder than your own private movie pavilion? How about three separate structures spread over 5.7 acres? Or perhaps a lap pool in the hills of California? Well, Flea has it all. Australian-American musician and actor, Flea (Michael Balzary), best known as the bass guitarist from The Red Hot Chili Peppers, stays in a USD $8.8million home in La Crescenta-Montrose, California. The two houses on this property are different architectural styles – one is a modern structure, and the other is mid-century. Our favourite of the two (pictured), is the mid-century style house, built in 1953. The sun rushes in through the floor to ceiling windows and floods every room of this mansion with light.

Alicia Keys

Alicia Keys and husband, fellow musician, Swizz Beatz hang out in their circular house in Los Angeles. The USD $21 million house, which has been referred to as an architectural masterpiece, was used to film the Iron Man movies. With stunning ocean views, it’s no surprise a lot of the house is made up of giant floor to ceiling windows. However, nothing about the space feels clinical, like glass can often be. Alicia Keys’ marvellous mansion is clean and warm with a casual, laid back vibe. The pair have taken a lot of inspiration from every place they’ve travelled around the world which you can see shining through in the decor. Everything was curated or designed specifically for the space.

North Island Markets to check out this Summer

If you’ve read my round-up of South Island markets, don’t worry; there are many epic markets to check out in the North Island too.

Here’s my list of the best:

Matakana Village Market

The Matakana Village markets are a staple market located in the heart of Matakana.

Every Saturday between 8am to 1pm, the market provides award-winning coffee, an incredible array of brunch meal options (the whitebait fritters are to DIE for), incredible baked goods (that sell out so quickly), healthy juices and kombuchas, and so much more to savour and enjoy.

The markets are located on the riverside, and there’s often live music and entertainment.

In addition, the markets are surrounded by a number of restaurants and shops nearby, which makes it the perfect choice for a weekend activity with some friends.

Clevedon Village Farmers Markets

The Clevedon markets are on every Sunday from 8am to 1pm at the Clevedon showgrounds.

Despite Clevedon being in Auckland, Clevedon Village is a step away from the immense hustle and bustle and feels more relaxed and friendly.

Founded in 2005, this market is filled with families enjoying their Sunday morning with some espresso and pastries.

As a market I frequent often, I do have to say that they have great fresh produce. One thing that I always pick up are the tomatoes; they have the most incredible cherry tomatoes grown by a local grower which are bursting with so much flavour, and more food options than most markets. I’m a sucker for the nutella filled crepes.

Keri Keri Old Packhouse Market

I stumbled upon the Old Packhouse markets once in Keri Keri, and loved the vibe of the markets here because it felt authentic and fostered feelings of community. It’s sprawling with both locals, and bustling with visitors from different cities.

Housing almost 100 vendors, there is so much to see and purchase here. From local and fresh produce to artisanal hand crafted products like homemade cards, plants, street food items like nachos and burgers, various baked goods, seafoods, cheeses, health and wellbeing products etc.,. this is a market that feels eclectic and is a one-stop shop for absolutely anything you may want. I had one of the most delicious pies I’ve ever eaten at this market!

In addition, this market also has live entertainment every Saturday and Sunday, which gives you a chance to listen to some local artists. The Old Packhouse Cafe, Bakery and Butchery are also open if you want more gourmet markets.

On every Saturday and Sunday, this market is a must visit if you’re in the area!

Napier Urban Farmers Market

Napier Urban Farmers Market – Community Lifestyle Photography – by John Miles Photography

Nestled in Hawkes Bay; the food and wine country of New Zealand; this market located in Clive Square of Hawkes Bay and is bustling every Saturday morning from 8:30am to 1pm.

This market is along the street, meaning a stroll up the street ends up with you eating freshly roasted coffee, pastries, homemade chocolate and confectionery, and all the produce you can ever imagine!

This market is small and homely – the growers and makers are there, ready to talk to you about anything.

There’s also an indoor section, and the baked goods from here are *chef’s kisses*. The best almond croissants are sold here with the creamiest insides.

If you’re in Hawkes Bay and looking for a more low key Saturday morning, this is the perfect way to start your day before a day of wine tasting!

Waikato Farmers Market

Technically two markets, the Waikato markets are in both Cambridge and Hamilton with the producers, growers and stallholders travelling between the two markets on each day of the weekend.

The Cambridge markets run every Saturday morning from 8am, in Victoria Square opposite the town hall in Cambridge. And the Hamilton markets are located in the Barn in Claudelands Event Centre every Sunday from 8am to noon.

The farmers markets are authentic, filled with fresh fruit and vegetables, breads and pastries, chocolates, home baking, seafood and handcrafted cheeses and honeys with other condiments too. The Cornish Pasties stall is something to really look out for! I devoured the spinach and mushroom medley pastry which was handmade from scratch.

A great option if you’re passing by or to make a day trip from Auckland – these markets are worth being on your radar!

Weird Quotes from Prince Harry’s book “Spare”

If you haven’t heard about “Spare,” I don’t know where you’ve been hiding because this book has caused a frenzy.

Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, released a memoir on 10 January 2023. The 416 page long book came with many revelations as Harry really doesn’t hold back in this book.

The range of things covered in the memoir is quite something. From outlining matters pertaining to his strained relationships with family members such as his brother Prince William (who is described as his “archnemesis” – a word I haven’t heard used since primary school!), to a candid insight in him dealing with the death of his mother Princess Diana, the time he killed 25 Taliban fighters in Afghanistan, and confessing that he begged his father Charles to not marry Camilla. This book provides an honest, and slightly one sided, look into Harry’s life.

Interestingly, the book confirms that the reason the book is called “Spare” is because the day he was born, his father dubbed him a “Spare”.

Now, in all honesty, as an avid reader, this book wasn’t great despite being a best seller. But what it did provide was some quality content in terms of weird quotes and glimpses into Harry’s mindset for some of his famous mishaps.

So to save you a mediocre read, and provide you with some entertainment, here are some very strange quotes from “Spare” that still live rent free in my head:

A Case of Frostbite

Harry, describing a case of a frostbite after visiting the North Pole wrote:

“Upon arriving home I’d been horrified to discover that my nether regions were frost nipped as well, and while the ears and cheeks were already healing, the todger wasn’t…” His downstairs was “oscillating between extremely sensitive and borderline traumatised… I’d been trying some home remedies, including one recommended by a friend. She’d urged me to apply Elizabeth Arden cream. I said to my friend ‘my mum used that on her lips. You want me to put that on my todger?’ She replied with “it works Harry, trust me”.

The product in question here was the Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream, and according to a tweet posted by Elizabeth Arden, sales in the UK of the product were boosted by 60% after the memoir was released!

This whole saga was bizarre, as the timing of the north pole trip was right before his brother’s wedding, so the passage closes with a quote:

“What was the universe trying to say to me by depriving me of both my brother and my penis?”

The Nazi costume

In 2005, Harry was spotted wearing a Nazi Costume which was received (understandably…) very controversially.

“I was debating whether to dress as a Nazi or a pilot for the Native and Colonial themed party… I phoned Willy and Kate, asked what they thought. Nazi uniform, they said. They both howled.”

Harry alleges in the memoir that Prince William and Princess Kate were the reasons for his err in judgement. Not sure If I believe that one…

Chilling with Nelson Mandela and the spice girls

Shortly after the passing of Princess Diana, King Charles and Harry went on a trip to South Africa.

“Pa’s staff hoped a photo of him standing alongside the world’s most revered political leader and the world’s most popular female act would earn him some positive headlines, which he sorely needed. … His approval rating around the world was in single digits.”

I don’t even know if this one needs an explanation. The picture speaks a thousand words.

Losing his virginity

When disclosing an incident with his bodyguard, he said “I suspected he was referring to my recent loss of virginity, a humiliating episode with an older woman who liked macho horses and who treated me like a young stallion.

I mounted her quickly, after which she spanked my ass and sent me away. One of my many mistakes was letting it happen in a field, just behind a very busy pub. No doubt someone had seen us.’

What a story!!
